IRONMAN 70.3 · La Quinta · 6 Dec 2026
How to train for IRONMAN 70.3 La Quinta
The organiser pitches La Quinta as the place for a first half-distance triathlon, and the pitch holds up. A protected reservoir. A single-loop bike it calls fast and flat. A run through a golf resort near Palm Springs, in December. First-timers read that and relax, which is the mistake. A flat course does not make pacing easy. It takes away every signal that would have told you to back off.
Here is the number that decides the day. After its first 1.4 km, the bike file does not change gradient again for 89.4 km, and the engine gives that one stretch 98 percent of the bike leg. Whatever power you settle on as the road flattens is the power you ride to Silver Rock, and the 21.4 km afterwards is the receipt.

What is actually on the road
The organiser's own course files, drawn the way the Event Analyzer draws a member's race.
- Swim1.93 km0 m upCourse file
- Bike90.8 km161 m upCourse file
- Run21.4 km in 2 laps111 m upCourse file
The swim is 1 lap of Lake Cahuilla, 1.9 km from a sandy beach, with a rolling start. The organiser logged the water at 15 C in 2025 and 14 C in 2023, and says you can sight off the mountains.
The bike is a single loop of 90.8 km. It leaves Lake Cahuilla on flat county roads, takes a lap of the Thermal Raceway, then crosses the City of La Quinta to finish at Silver Rock Golf Resort. It ends somewhere other than where it began, so the two transitions sit apart.
The run is 2 laps on cart paths and roads through the resort, past ponds and greens, to a finish in the heart of Silver Rock Park. The organiser promises smooth rollers. The file measures 111 m over 21.4 km, and the engine reads the whole run as one flat segment.
Now the profile. 161 m on the bike, 272 m across the day, and 99.6 percent of the course flat by distance. Every gradient the engine can separate from the road sits in the opening 1.4 km of the bike: a 198 m rise at 2.5 percent, two short drops, a gentle 760 m between them. The rest of the climbing is ripple too small to form a segment. Then 89.4 km of nothing, and 98 percent of the leg.

Each row is one unbroken stretch of the course that keeps the same shape the whole way. The number is how much of that leg you spend inside it, and it comes out the same whether you are fast or slow.
What this course asks of each leg
Twelve training dimensions scored for each leg against its own course, the way the Event Analyzer scores a member's race.
Steady power, and the patience to leave it alone. The demand model scores aerobic endurance at 85 and muscular endurance at 80 on the bike, with threshold capacity at 70 and both durability scores at 65 behind them. Since the bike fills 51 percent of a Trained athlete's day, the six largest demands on the whole course belong to it. The run's leading pair reads 85 and 81.
What is missing tells you as much. High-intensity capacity scores 40 on every leg. Strength and force read 35 on the bike. No ramp here asks for a minute above your steady number, and no descent hands the minute back. The skill on this course is in the water: technical skill reads 74 for the swim against 48 for the bike. In a reservoir with the mountains as your sighting line, a straight course is free time.
Put the bands beside it. A Trained athlete swims 38:52, rides 2:57:52 at 182 W and runs 2:00:59, for 5:47:43. The Competitive band finishes in 5:03:45 from 4.15 W/kg at 75 kg, some 20 minutes faster on the bike and 18 on the run. On a road this even, that gap is the steady number itself. Nothing on the course lets a strong climber or a brave descender claw time back.
The organiser's three editions disagree about the weather. 2025 topped out at 22 C after a low of 8 C. 2024 reached 31 C. The water sat at 14 to 15 C in all three years. Environmental resilience scores 60 on every leg, and La Quinta earns it from both ends of the thermometer: cool water at the start, and in a warm year a run that begins more than three and a half hours after the gun for a Trained athlete.

Nymiva reads what you can already show, from your own data
Connect your training history and the Focus Lab scores the same twelve dimensions this course demands against where you sit today. The gap between the two is what you train.
- MeasuredFrom your thresholds and testsThreshold power, threshold pace, critical swim speed and field tests you have done. The dimensions they can carry are scored directly.
- EstimatedFrom your training historyConnected activities are read for what they prove: long efforts, late-session fade, repeated hard work, fueling on long days. Each score says how it was read.
- ProxyFrom a stand-in, and named as oneWhere only an indirect signal exists, the score carries the proxy it came from and a lower confidence, never a number dressed as a measurement.
- UnmeasuredHonestly blankA dimension nothing in your data can answer stays unmeasured. It is never a zero, and the plan does not pretend to know it.
Every dimension ends in one word
- Develop the course asks more than you can show
- Maintain close enough to hold at the minimum dose
- Covered nothing to build here
- Unmeasured the course needs it, your data cannot say yet
Nymiva reads every course and every athlete on the same twelve dimensions. The course side comes from the organiser's file. The athlete side comes from thresholds and connected training history, and each score carries a note on where it came from and how much weight it can bear. A gap exists only where the course asks for more than the athlete can show, and each gap is weighted by the share of race day it occupies. Here the bike is half the day and the swim a little over a tenth, so the ranking leans hard toward the bike.
No athlete stands behind this page. The season beneath it therefore assumes the gaps sit exactly where the demands are largest, and builds 24 weeks on that assumption: 5 developmental blocks and a two-week taper. Aerobic endurance leads the first block in all three sports and returns to lead the last. The second block puts aerobic durability first on the bike and threshold durability first on the run. The third turns to threshold capacity on land and to technique in the water. Muscular endurance leads the fourth. A member's season starts from their own numbers and will reorder all of it.

Train the bike to protect the run
Which demands matter most across the whole race. A leg's demand counts for as much of the day as that leg takes, so a score of 85 on the bike outweighs the same score on the swim.
- 01Aerobic enduranceBike leg, 51% of the day85 × 51%44
- 02Muscular enduranceBike leg, 51% of the day80 × 51%41
- 03Threshold capacityBike leg, 51% of the day70 × 51%36
The bike takes 51% of the Trained reference band’s day, so its demands carry the most race weight. What the bike leaves in the legs is what the run gets.
Which demand gets a block, and when
The engine freezes one lead focus per sport on every developmental block, holds the rest at maintenance, and verifies before it reprioritises.
An illustration, not your plan. This page has none of your data, so the season below is the engine’s answer to one stated assumption: that your gaps line up with what IRONMAN 70.3 La Quinta demands. Your own season is built from your history, your thresholds, the days you can train and the races you have entered, and it will differ from this in its priorities, its sessions and its load.

Where it is decided
On the county roads, in the first minutes after the gradient runs out.
The opening 1.4 km of the bike wriggle a little. Then the road goes flat and stays flat for 89.4 km. The field is still bunched, the legs are fresh from a cool swim, and everyone has just read the words fast and flat. The power you choose here is not an opening effort you can correct later. There is no climb to slow you and no descent to rest you, so it simply becomes the power you ride. Hold 182 W as a Trained athlete and that is the whole plan for the next three hours.
Then comes the Thermal Raceway. A lap of a racetrack in the middle of a flat course is an invitation to the one surge of the day, and the organiser all but sends it, offering the lap for when you feel the need for extra speed. Take the speed from the tarmac, not from your legs.
Ask the engine for a session from this bike file and it returns one unbroken hour close to threshold, with only a warm-up and an easy spin around it. No intervals, because the road has none. The run afterwards is 2:00:59 for a Trained athlete from an input of 5:06 /km threshold pace, and 1:42:48 for the Competitive band. Most of the difference between those two runs is settled back on the county roads.
Getting it wrong
Pacing to the brochure comes first. Fast and flat reads like permission, and riders who would never open a hilly course near threshold do it here, because nothing on the road pushes back. A few watts over plan feel like nothing for an hour. At Silver Rock they feel like the whole second loop.
The second is the water. It sat at 14 to 15 C in every edition the organiser publishes, and the 2025 morning low was 8 C. An athlete who trained only in a warm pool meets cool open water, a crowded rolling start and a sighting line off distant mountains in the same quarter of an hour. Technical skill scores 74 in this swim for a reason.
The third is the rollers. The organiser's smooth rollers on the cart paths are small enough that the engine reads the run as flat. They are big enough to notice on the second loop, with family and friends cheering at several points along the route, if the bike was ridden a few watts too proud.

Every session is a claim, every block is a test
A plan is not a calendar. Each key session states what it trains and how that is checked, and each block ends with a public verdict before the next one is chosen.
What a block promises
Bike aerobic endurance moves from your baseline to a stated target by the end of Foundation 1
- The baseline is your measured score when the block starts. The target is the score the model predicts for it.
- Verified at the block’s recovery week, by a field test or a refresh of the supply read from your history.
- Confidence rises by agreement between independent signals, never by one metric crossing a line.
- A block that misses its target is a public miss. The next block is chosen from what was proven, not from what was planned.
- 01Stimulus achievedThe work landed in the zone the session named, for the dose it named.
- 02Partially achievedSome of the work landed. The session banks what it can prove.
- 03Not achievedThe load may have been there. The stimulus was not, so nothing is banked.
- 04Data insufficientNo usable stream. The session is neither credited nor blamed.

Questions people ask
- How flat is the IRONMAN 70.3 La Quinta bike course?
- About as flat as a half-distance bike gets. The single loop measures 161 m of climbing over 90.8 km, and every gradient the engine can separate from the road sits in the first 1.4 km. The 89.4 km after that read as one segment at zero percent, holding 98 percent of the bike leg.
- What water temperature should I expect in Lake Cahuilla?
- The organiser logged 15 C in 2025 and 2024 and 14 C in 2023. The swim is one loop of a protected reservoir with a sandy beach start and a rolling start. The wetsuit decision is not on the organiser's course page, so check it in race week.
- How many loops is the IRONMAN 70.3 La Quinta run?
- Two, on cart paths and roads through the Silver Rock Golf Resort, finishing in the heart of Silver Rock Park. The organiser mentions smooth rollers. The file measures 111 m of climbing over 21.4 km, and the engine reads the whole run as flat.
- How long is the season on this page?
- The illustrative season runs 24 weeks, with five developmental blocks and a two-week taper. It is built from the course alone. A member's season starts from their own numbers and can be longer.
