How to train for IRONMAN Vitoria-Gasteiz
The organiser's own course page tags the bike as rolling and calls the route wavy, so people come to Vitoria-Gasteiz with climbing legs. They bring the wrong tool. The file for the 180 km bike climbs 750 m in total, and across the whole 226 km of the day only about 2.5 km counts as climbing.
What the course does have is length and July. The organiser logged 35 C in 2026. A Trained athlete's day of 12:07:17 is decided by how much of it is still intact when the run starts in that heat, nearly eight hours after the start.

You swim one loop of Ulibarri-Gamboa lake, 3.8 km in the Landa Provincial Park outside the city, in water the organiser calls drinking quality. It measured 22 C in 2025 and 21 C in 2024. Transition 1 sits in the park, 20 km from the centre of Vitoria-Gasteiz: 50 m of running to the bags, the blue bike bag, then 200 m across the grass to the start of the bike.
The bike is two and a half loops through the towns of the Álava region, and for a stretch it shares the road with the Camino de Santiago. It does not come back to the lake. It ends at Transition 2 on Calle Olaguíbel, in the centre, and from there it is 150 m along Calle Fueros to the red bags and out onto the run. Four loops, flat, through the city centre and the medieval inner city, to the finish in Plaza España.
Now the profile. The longest rise on the bike is 632 m at 4.6 percent. The steepest is 381 m at 5.2 percent, near kilometre 155, and it takes under 1 percent of the bike leg. The opening 39.4 km out of the park read as a single flat segment, and that one stretch holds 21 percent of the bike leg, the largest block of time anywhere on the course. The run is one flat segment from the end of its first 76 m to the line.

Each row is one unbroken stretch of the course that keeps the same shape the whole way. The number is how much of that leg you spend inside it, and it comes out the same whether you are fast or slow.
What this course asks of each leg
Twelve training dimensions scored for each leg against its own course, the way the Event Analyzer scores a member's race.
Endurance, three times over, and the ability to keep feeding it. The demand model scores aerobic endurance at 95 on every leg. On the bike, aerobic durability reads 92 and muscular endurance 91. On the run, aerobic durability matches aerobic endurance at 95, because the second half of the marathon is the whole point. Because the bike fills 52 percent of a Trained athlete's day, the five largest demands on the course are all bike demands.
Fueling resilience is the score to look at twice. It reads 85 on all three legs and sits fourth in the cross-leg ranking, ahead of threshold durability and a long way ahead of threshold capacity, which reads only 55. Nothing on this course asks you to go hard. It asks you to keep eating and drinking on the aero bars for six hours while the air warms up around you, and then to run a marathon on what you managed to take in.
The bands put numbers on it. A Trained athlete swims 1:20:05, rides 6:18:50 at 159 W and runs 4:18:22. The Competitive band finishes in 10:33:22 from 4.15 W/kg at 75 kg and 4:20 /km threshold pace. That is 44 minutes gained on the bike and 39 on the run, and none of it comes from a hill. It comes from a steadier, higher number on flat road and a run that survives the afternoon.
Heat is the condition the day turns on. The organiser's highs run 32 C, 33 C and 35 C over the three editions it publishes, with lows of 14 C to 16 C. The morning in the park is cool. The run in the city is not.

Nymiva reads what you can already show, from your own data
Connect your training history and the Focus Lab scores the same twelve dimensions this course demands against where you sit today. The gap between the two is what you train.
- MeasuredFrom your thresholds and testsThreshold power, threshold pace, critical swim speed and field tests you have done. The dimensions they can carry are scored directly.
- EstimatedFrom your training historyConnected activities are read for what they prove: long efforts, late-session fade, repeated hard work, fueling on long days. Each score says how it was read.
- ProxyFrom a stand-in, and named as oneWhere only an indirect signal exists, the score carries the proxy it came from and a lower confidence, never a number dressed as a measurement.
- UnmeasuredHonestly blankA dimension nothing in your data can answer stays unmeasured. It is never a zero, and the plan does not pretend to know it.
Every dimension ends in one word
- Develop the course asks more than you can show
- Maintain close enough to hold at the minimum dose
- Covered nothing to build here
- Unmeasured the course needs it, your data cannot say yet
Every dimension in that demand list has a twin on the athlete's side. Nymiva reads the course from its file and reads you from your thresholds and your connected training, scores both on the same twelve dimensions, and says for each score where it came from and how far to trust it. A gap exists only where the course asks for more than you can show. The gaps are then weighted by how much of the day they fill, which on this course means the bike first and the swim a distant third.
This page knows nothing about you, so its season works from the plainest assumption, that your gaps sit where the course demands most. It lays out 28 weeks in 5 developmental blocks and a two-week taper. Aerobic endurance leads the first block in all three sports for eight weeks. Then comes something you will not see on many courses: a block led by fueling resilience in every sport. Muscular endurance leads the third on the bike and the run while the swim works on aerobic durability, the fourth swaps those roles, and aerobic endurance returns to lead the last block before the taper. A member's season starts from their own numbers and will not match this one.

Train the bike to protect the run
Which demands matter most across the whole race. A leg's demand counts for as much of the day as that leg takes, so a score of 85 on the bike outweighs the same score on the swim.
- 01Aerobic enduranceBike leg, 52% of the day95 × 52%50
- 02Aerobic durabilityBike leg, 52% of the day92 × 52%48
- 03Muscular enduranceBike leg, 52% of the day91 × 52%47
The bike takes 52% of the Trained reference band’s day, so its demands carry the most race weight. What the bike leaves in the legs is what the run gets.
Which demand gets a block, and when
The engine freezes one lead focus per sport on every developmental block, holds the rest at maintenance, and verifies before it reprioritises.
An illustration, not your plan. This page has none of your data, so the season below is the engine’s answer to one stated assumption: that your gaps line up with what IRONMAN Vitoria-Gasteiz demands. Your own season is built from your history, your thresholds, the days you can train and the races you have entered, and it will differ from this in its priorities, its sessions and its load.

Where it is decided
On the run, and mostly before it.
Ask the engine to turn this bike file into a workout and it hands back six one-minute efforts in Zone 5 with more than half an hour of easy riding between each. That is the course admitting it has nothing to rehearse. There is no climb where the race breaks up and no descent where it is won. There is 6:18:50 of steady riding at 159 W for a Trained athlete, and the only variable left is how that power is spent.
Where it gets spent badly is the first 39.4 km. You leave the Landa Provincial Park in the cool of the morning, the road is flat, and 21 percent of the whole bike leg passes before the first real change of gradient. Nothing hurts. Everything around you is fast. Then the rest of the ride carries you into the heat of the day toward Calle Olaguíbel.
The run is where the bill is read out. Four loops of flat city road, 4:18:22 for a Trained athlete from an input of 5:06 /km threshold pace, in the hottest part of a day that reached 35 C in 2026. A runner who rode the morning to plan and kept eating through the afternoon passes people on every loop. A runner who did neither finds the medieval inner city very beautiful and very long.
Getting it wrong
The first mistake is training for the wrong race. Read rolling on the course page and you do hill repeats all spring. The course then asks for 632 m at 4.6 percent as its longest climb and six hours of flat aerobic riding, and strength and force scores just 48 on the bike against 95 for aerobic endurance.
The second is the cool start. With lows of 14 C to 16 C, the ride out of the park feels like a gift. Riders bank power in it that belongs to the afternoon, and they bank too little food and drink because nobody feels thirsty at dawn. Both come due on the run.
The third is the crowd. The organiser promises a city centre completely crowded with fans, and the page quotes the shout you will hear, AUPA. It is real and it arrives on every one of the four loops. On the first loop it pulls you out of Calle Fueros too fast. By the fourth, with Plaza España in reach, it is the reason you are still running. Save yourself for the fourth.

Every session is a claim, every block is a test
A plan is not a calendar. Each key session states what it trains and how that is checked, and each block ends with a public verdict before the next one is chosen.
What a block promises
Bike aerobic endurance moves from your baseline to a stated target by the end of Foundation 1
- The baseline is your measured score when the block starts. The target is the score the model predicts for it.
- Verified at the block’s recovery week, by a field test or a refresh of the supply read from your history.
- Confidence rises by agreement between independent signals, never by one metric crossing a line.
- A block that misses its target is a public miss. The next block is chosen from what was proven, not from what was planned.
- 01Stimulus achievedThe work landed in the zone the session named, for the dose it named.
- 02Partially achievedSome of the work landed. The session banks what it can prove.
- 03Not achievedThe load may have been there. The stimulus was not, so nothing is banked.
- 04Data insufficientNo usable stream. The session is neither credited nor blamed.

Questions people ask
- How hilly is the IRONMAN Vitoria-Gasteiz bike course?
- Less than the word rolling suggests. The organiser's 180 km file climbs 750 m in total, and 97.8 percent of the whole course is flat. The longest rise is 632 m at 4.6 percent and the steepest is 381 m at 5.2 percent, near kilometre 155.
- What is the water temperature in Ulibarri-Gamboa lake?
- The organiser records 22 C in 2025 and 21 C in 2024, and publishes no water figure for 2026. The swim is a single loop of 3.8 km in the Landa Provincial Park, in water the organiser describes as drinking quality.
- How hot does IRONMAN Vitoria-Gasteiz get?
- The organiser logged a high of 35 C in 2026, 33 C in 2025 and 32 C in 2024, with lows between 14 C and 16 C. The morning in the park is cool. The afternoon run in the city is not.
- Is the IRONMAN Vitoria-Gasteiz run course flat?
- Yes. It is four loops through the city centre, finishing in Plaza España. The organiser's file measures 42.6 km with 146 m of climbing, and the engine reads everything after the first 76 m as one flat segment.
Course data from the organiser’s published files, analysed 23 Sept 2026 by engine 1, demand model 4. Reference times are simulated for a peer band at a stated reference athlete and are not a prediction for anyone. Nothing on this page is medical advice.
