How to train for IRONMAN Italy Emilia Romagna
Cervia sells a flat day beside the sea, and nearly everybody who enters reads the profile the same way. One climb. They find Bertinoro on the map, they put hill repeats in the calendar, and they spend the winter training for the part of the race that changes the result least. A Trained reference athlete is on that climb for a little under fifteen minutes, twice.
Here is what they signed up for instead. Of 226 km of racing, 96 percent is flat by distance. The bike alone runs to 6:17:38 of a Trained athlete's 12:03:51. At the end of it come 42.2 km in four laps through a September beach town, and the number that decides how those laps go was set hours earlier, on a road with no gradient on it at all.

What is actually on the road
The organiser's own course files, drawn the way the Event Analyzer draws a member's race.
- Swim3.82 km0 m upCourse file
- Bike180 km512 m upCourse file
- Run42.2 km123 m upCourse file
The swim is a single loop of 3.8 km from the central beach of Cervia. You go out into the Adriatic Sea, swim along the shoreline, turn and come back. The organiser describes shallow water and tiny waves, and records the water at 24 C in 2025 and 23 C in 2024. Transition is the longest of the region at almost 500 m, with roughly 100 m of it between the water exit and the bike park.
Then two loops of 180 km away from the promenade, through the countryside of Romagna and the Salt Pans Nature Park where the flamingos are. Inland, the road finally goes up at Bertinoro: 2.1 km at 6.9 percent, from about 43 m to 190 m, once per loop at kilometre 64 and kilometre 134. The descent gives it all back. Total climbing for the leg is 512 m, which is less than many riders put into a Sunday morning.
The run is four laps of 10 km with 123 m of climbing in the whole marathon. Each one passes the port canal, runs the main streets of Milano Marittima, crosses the square of the historic Salt Warehouse in the heart of Cervia, goes through the medieval city walls and opens onto the Town Hall Square. You will see all of it four times.

What this course asks of each leg
Twelve training dimensions scored for each leg against its own course, the way the Event Analyzer scores a member's race.
Aerobic endurance, scored 95 on every leg, and then aerobic endurance again. Behind it on the bike sit aerobic durability at 91, muscular endurance at 91, fueling resilience at 85 and threshold durability at 81. Because the bike holds more than half the day, the five largest demands in the cross-leg ranking are all bike demands and the next two are the run's.
Look at what is missing. High-intensity capacity reads 29 on the bike. Strength and force reaches 51 there against 35 on the run, and that 51 is Bertinoro, twice, and nothing else. No part of this course pays for a sprint.
What does stand out is fueling resilience. It scores 85 on all three legs and comes fourth in the whole ranking, ahead of threshold capacity anywhere. The reason is arithmetic rather than physiology. A Trained athlete finishes in 12:03:51 and does not start running until nearly eight hours have gone, by which time the air is at whatever the day decided. The organiser logged a high of 26 C in 2025 and 25 C in 2026.
The bands make the shape plain. A Trained athlete swims 1:20:13, rides 6:17:38 at 159 W and runs 4:16:00. The Competitive band finishes in 10:27:18 off 4.15 W/kg at 75 kg and 4:20 /km threshold pace, taking 47 minutes out of the bike and 38 out of the run. Of those 47 bike minutes, under eight come from the two climbs. The rest is won on flat road, at a higher number held for longer, by someone who then still runs.

Nymiva reads what you can already show, from your own data
Connect your training history and the Focus Lab scores the same twelve dimensions this course demands against where you sit today. The gap between the two is what you train.
- MeasuredFrom your thresholds and testsThreshold power, threshold pace, critical swim speed and field tests you have done. The dimensions they can carry are scored directly.
- EstimatedFrom your training historyConnected activities are read for what they prove: long efforts, late-session fade, repeated hard work, fueling on long days. Each score says how it was read.
- ProxyFrom a stand-in, and named as oneWhere only an indirect signal exists, the score carries the proxy it came from and a lower confidence, never a number dressed as a measurement.
- UnmeasuredHonestly blankA dimension nothing in your data can answer stays unmeasured. It is never a zero, and the plan does not pretend to know it.
Every dimension ends in one word
- Develop the course asks more than you can show
- Maintain close enough to hold at the minimum dose
- Covered nothing to build here
- Unmeasured the course needs it, your data cannot say yet
Nymiva scores twelve dimensions on both sides of the question. The course is read from its own file, the athlete from their thresholds and their connected training history, and every score carries a note on how it was read. A dimension is a gap only where the course asks for more than the athlete can currently show. Gaps are then weighted by how much of the day they occupy, which is why a bike gap on this course outranks a swim gap of the same size by a distance.
There is no athlete on this page, so the season below assumes the simplest thing: that your gaps fall where the demands are largest. From that it lays out 28 weeks in 5 developmental blocks. Look at what the second one leads with. Not power. Fueling resilience, across all three sports, for four weeks, because that is what a course of this length in this month scores. Your own season is built from your numbers and will disagree with this one, and that disagreement is the whole product.

Train the bike to protect the run
Which demands matter most across the whole race. A leg's demand counts for as much of the day as that leg takes, so a score of 85 on the bike outweighs the same score on the swim.
- 01Aerobic enduranceBike leg, 52% of the day95 × 52%50
- 02Aerobic durabilityBike leg, 52% of the day91 × 52%48
- 03Muscular enduranceBike leg, 52% of the day91 × 52%48
The bike takes 52% of the Trained reference band’s day, so its demands carry the most race weight. What the bike leaves in the legs is what the run gets.
Which demand gets a block, and when
The engine freezes one lead focus per sport on every developmental block, holds the rest at maintenance, and verifies before it reprioritises.
An illustration, not your plan. This page has none of your data, so the season below is the engine’s answer to one stated assumption: that your gaps line up with what IRONMAN Italy Emilia Romagna demands. Your own season is built from your history, your thresholds, the days you can train and the races you have entered, and it will differ from this in its priorities, its sessions and its load.

Where it is decided
Not at Bertinoro. The climb is 4 percent of the bike leg.
Watch what the engine does with it. Asked to compile this bike course into a single session, it returns two six-minute efforts at Zone 4 separated by more than two hours of easy riding, inside a ride of about two and three-quarter hours. That is not a hill workout. That is an honest drawing of the leg: a very long steady effort with two short questions buried in it, and the right answer to both is the power you were already holding.
The largest single block of time on the course is the opening 63.7 km of the bike, flat at 0.1 percent, which the engine reads as 35 percent of the leg. You reach it straight out of warm shallow water, on fresh legs, in a group. Nothing about it hurts. Everything about it counts. The marathon that follows is one flat segment from the first metre to the last, scored at 95 for aerobic endurance and 95 for aerobic durability, and it will report back exactly what you spent on the flat, roughly four hours after you spent it.
Getting it wrong
The first mistake is the winter one. Hill repeats for Bertinoro, a rider who arrives able to climb it beautifully, and a bike split decided by the 512 m of climbing they trained for rather than the 175 km they did not.
The second is the opening loop. A 24 C swim is a gentle way to start a long day, the road out past the Salt Pans is flat and quick, and the riders around you are all feeling the same thing. Fifteen extra watts held for three hours costs nothing you can feel at the time. It is charged back on lap three in Cervia, with interest.
The third belongs to the run. Four laps means four passes through the Town Hall Square, four passes across the Salt Warehouse square, four separate offers from the crowd to run faster than you planned. Take the first one and you will be walking past the same people later, in the same heat, watching them still cheer.

Every session is a claim, every block is a test
A plan is not a calendar. Each key session states what it trains and how that is checked, and each block ends with a public verdict before the next one is chosen.
What a block promises
Bike aerobic endurance moves from your baseline to a stated target by the end of Foundation 1
- The baseline is your measured score when the block starts. The target is the score the model predicts for it.
- Verified at the block’s recovery week, by a field test or a refresh of the supply read from your history.
- Confidence rises by agreement between independent signals, never by one metric crossing a line.
- A block that misses its target is a public miss. The next block is chosen from what was proven, not from what was planned.
- 01Stimulus achievedThe work landed in the zone the session named, for the dose it named.
- 02Partially achievedSome of the work landed. The session banks what it can prove.
- 03Not achievedThe load may have been there. The stimulus was not, so nothing is banked.
- 04Data insufficientNo usable stream. The session is neither credited nor blamed.
- Session verified

Questions people ask
- How hard is the Bertinoro climb on the IRONMAN Italy Emilia Romagna bike course?
- It is 2.1 km at 6.9 percent, rising from roughly 43 m to 190 m, and the two-loop course meets it at kilometre 64 and again at kilometre 134. A Trained reference athlete spends a little under fifteen minutes on each ascent. Everything else on the 180 km is flat road.
- What water temperature should I expect in the Adriatic Sea at Cervia?
- The organiser records 24 C in 2025 and 23 C in 2024 off the central beach of Cervia. The same page describes shallow water and tiny waves on a single-loop course that runs along the shoreline and turns back.
- How many laps is the run course?
- Four laps of 10 km each, completely flat, 123 m of climbing across the whole 42.2 km. Each lap takes in the port canal, the main streets of Milano Marittima, the square of the historic Salt Warehouse, the medieval city walls and the Town Hall Square.
- How long is the season on this page?
- The illustrative season runs 28 weeks with five developmental blocks and a two-week taper. It is built from the course alone. A member's season starts from their own thresholds and connected history instead.
