The recovery sections are not recovery

A cross-country race is a string of near-maximal efforts joined by sections that look like rest and are not. The climb ends, the singletrack starts, and you spend the next stretch braking, absorbing, steering, picking a line and holding a bike upright over ground that will not let you sit still. Your heart rate does not fall the way it would on the same minutes of tarmac descent.

That is the shape of the demand, and it is why cross-country cannot be trained as hard intervals with clean recoveries between them. What decides your race is how many times you can go deep and still be useful, not how deep you can go once.

Repeatability is the ability, and peak power is not it

Your power curve says what you can produce fresh across every duration you have ridden hard. It is the wrong tool for predicting the last lap. Two riders with identical peak numbers can finish far apart, because one keeps producing that number on the closing climb and the other stopped halfway round.

So repeatability is scored as its own question rather than inferred. In the demand vocabulary a cross-country course sits high on high-intensity capacity and anaerobic capacity, with muscular endurance under it and a large aerobic base under that. The aerobic part is what clears the last effort in time for the next one, which is why an all-intervals approach makes riders worse at the thing they were trying to improve.

Fitness gained on the road does not automatically become speed

A rider who cannot ride a course smoothly does not get to spend their fitness on it. Every hard brake into a corner is a surge back out of it, every clumsy line is power spent buying back speed that did not need to be lost, and the accumulated cost across a race is larger than most riders expect.

So technical skill is treated as a real demand dimension. Trail surface raises it, and corner and hairpin geometry read from your uploaded course raises it further. It matters diagnostically too, because a technical limiter can hide behind a physiological reading. A rider whose problem is line choice shows up as short of power, since that is what the file says, and more intervals then treat the symptom. The Focus Lab scores your history as supply against the event as demand, names the gap that matters most with its measured size, and shows which abilities are already on target with reserve.

Where the minimum length comes from

Worth stating plainly, because most plan pages leave this vague. The minimum above is graded as established coaching practice rather than a research finding. It is a floor drawn from the coaching literature, not an outcome measured in a trial.

For cross-country specifically, it is one of five rows in the guided ladder that are product interpolation between sourced neighbours. No book on the shelf prescribes cross-country minimums, so the row was placed between the bike events that are sourced, and it carries that limitation in its applicability notes inside the product. Other rows are extracted from named published plans. This one is reasoned. You should know which you are getting.

What a fixed cross-country plan cannot know

It cannot know your course, whether it is a fast fire-road circuit that rides like a road race or a technical loop where the descents cost as much as the climbs. It cannot know whether your gap is power or handling, which is the most consequential thing about a cross-country rider. And it cannot know that the only riding within reach on a weekday evening is a road.

How your plan is built

Your riding goes in as supply, from efforts you actually made rather than a number typed once. The course goes in as demand, your available days go in as a constraint, and the season comes out laid backwards from race day through Prep, Foundation, Event shaping and Peak. Foundation is what other plans call base, Event shaping is what they call build.

Early weeks tackle the focus points furthest from the race demand. Late shaping weeks tackle the most event-specific ones, which for cross-country means repeated efforts at the climb durations your lap contains, with the last repetition arriving on legs that have already worked. What changes when your goal changes

The wizard asks what outcome you want, across five levels from finishing to an excellent result, and every minimum scales with the answer. Chasing the top of that range means roughly twice the weekly training time and two more sessions a week, over a longer minimum length. The declared race distance moves them too, since a short lap-based race and a marathon-length one are different jobs.

The minimums are destinations rather than week one. Nobody starts at the weekly hours shown above, and how fast you grow into them is bounded by your own recent riding.

What a week actually looks like

At the session floor above, a cross-country week usually resolves to one session of repeated hard efforts with controlled recovery, one longer ride carrying the aerobic work, and one easy ride kept genuinely easy. Where terrain allows, skill work rides alongside rather than waiting for a spare weekend, because it is cheap in fatigue and expensive to skip. Extra sessions buy aerobic volume before they buy intensity.

When life interferes

Missed sessions are forgiven and never redistributed. Illness suspends the plan and rebuilds toward the level you had actually reached, not the level the original plan assumed. Small adjustments apply themselves, while changing your primary focus or restarting after an interruption comes to you first with what changed and which data triggered it. Anything resembling pain or injury is escalated to you rather than diagnosed, because this is training guidance and not medical care.

Questions people ask

Can I train for cross-country mostly on the road?

Aerobic volume, yes. The repeatability work can also be done on the road if your trails are far away. What cannot be outsourced is riding technical ground under fatigue, which is a separate ability and gets its own place in the week.

I also race criteriums. Is that useful preparation?

The repeatability crosses over well, which is why the criterium plan shares some of its shape with this one. The handling does not, and neither does the ability to produce power while your bike is moving underneath you.

Do I need a power meter?

No. Planning works from heart rate and rated effort, and rated effort matters more than usual here, since heart rate lags badly on a course that never lets it settle. Anything that genuinely needs watts is shown as unavailable rather than approximated.
