Floors, not fixed lengths. These are the minimums for finishing the event. A more ambitious goal raises them, and a season can run up to 52 weeks.

Gravel is not a road race with dust on it
The assumption that sinks most gravel preparation is that gravel is road racing on a rougher surface, so road training transfers with a small discount. It does not, and three things break it.
Surface costs you speed for the same effort, which quietly invalidates every target you have ever set in kilometres per hour. The efforts are repeated short punches rather than steady tempo, so the ability that decides your day is how many times you can go hard and settle again. And handling and equipment choices move the result more than they do on tarmac, where the road is the same everywhere and the only variable is you.
Speed stops telling you the truth
On tarmac, speed is a usable proxy for effort. On loose ground it is not. The same output produces a different number depending on the surface under you, your line through a corner, how soft the last shower left the sector, and what tyres you chose that morning. A plan that hands you speed targets is handing you noise.
So surface is treated as a real property of the course rather than a texture. It raises technical skill in the demand score, and it changes how confidently the course can be read at all. Elevation with an unknown surface is graded lower than elevation and surface together, and the grade is shown to you rather than hidden behind a confident-looking chart. The efforts are punches, not tempo
Open a power file from a gravel race and what stands out is how little of it sits anywhere near a steady output. Corners, loose rises, soft sectors and the accordion of a group on a narrow line produce a day made of short surges with partial recovery between them. Nobody chooses that pacing. The surface chooses it.
The abilities under that are high-intensity capacity and muscular endurance on a large aerobic foundation, with repeatability treated as its own question rather than read off a peak number. One strong punch says what you can do fresh. Whether it is still there deep into the race decides where you finish.
Hours on the surface, not only hours
The long ride floor above does a second job on gravel. Vibration, a busier position and constant handling attention make the same duration cost more than it would on tarmac, and they make fuelling harder for the simple reason that your hands are occupied.
So time on the surface is not interchangeable with time. Aerobic endurance can be built anywhere. Holding a line while tired and eating on rough ground cannot.
What a fixed gravel plan cannot know
It cannot know whether your race is fast hardpack that rides like a road race or a chunky course that punishes every lapse in handling. It cannot know whether your gap is the size of your punches or the number of them. And it cannot know that the only gravel within reach of a weekday evening is a canal towpath, with your real terrain a weekend drive away.
How your plan is built
Your riding goes in as supply, measured from efforts you actually made. The course goes in as demand, with climbs kept as durations rather than distances and surface carried through as its own dimension. Your available days go in as a constraint. The season comes out laid backwards from race day through Prep, Foundation, Event shaping and Peak. Foundation is what other plans call base, Event shaping is what they call build.
One thing worth saying plainly about the minimum length shown above. It is graded as established coaching practice rather than a research finding, and for gravel it is interpolated between the sourced rows either side of it, because gravel racing is absent from the whole coaching shelf we drew from. The row sits between road race and gran fondo. That is stated as interpolation rather than dressed up as evidence, and it is why the plan leans on your own riding rather than on a published template.
Early weeks tackle the focus points furthest from the race demand. Late shaping weeks tackle the most event-specific ones, which on gravel means repeated efforts at the durations your course contains, arriving on legs that have already done work. What changes when your goal changes
Two answers move the plan. The distance you declare re-prices the minimums, because a gravel race you finish before lunch and one that runs into the evening are not the same job, and the gran fondo plan explains that scaling in more depth. The goal tier moves them again, across five levels from finishing to an excellent result. Chasing the top of that range means roughly twice the weekly training time and two more sessions a week, over a longer minimum length.
The minimums are destinations rather than week one. Nobody starts at the weekly hours shown above, and your ramp is bounded by your own recent riding.
What a week actually looks like
At the session floor above, a gravel week usually resolves to one session of repeated hard efforts with controlled recovery, one long ride that grows toward the floor above, and one easy ride that stays easy. Where terrain allows, the long ride happens on the surface you will race on. Extra sessions buy aerobic volume before they buy intensity, and the week's focus sets its emphasis rather than the content of every session.
When life interferes
Missed sessions are forgiven and never redistributed. Illness suspends the plan and rebuilds toward the level you had actually reached rather than the level the original plan assumed. Small adjustments apply themselves, while changing your primary focus or restarting after an interruption comes to you with what changed and why. Anything resembling pain or injury is escalated to you rather than diagnosed, because this is training guidance and not medical care.
Questions people ask
Do I have to do all my training on gravel?
No, and most people cannot. Aerobic volume transfers fine from the road. Handling under fatigue and eating on rough ground do not, so the surface is placed where it earns the most, which is the long rides and the event-specific work late in the season.
My race is really a road race on dirt roads. Does that change anything?
Yes, and that is the point of reading the course rather than the category. A smooth, steady course scores higher on threshold durability and lower on technical skill, and the season it produces looks different from one built for a chunky, punchy day.
Do I need a power meter for gravel?
It helps more here than almost anywhere, because speed is unreliable on loose ground. It is not required. Planning works from heart rate and rated effort, and anything that genuinely needs watts is shown as unavailable rather than approximated.
